There are big differences between the plans which i dont understand, but this book fills in a lot of the missing details from the website and offers info on nutrition, cross training, clothing, and motivation.
Of course i could find all this information online but there is so much conflicting knowledge out there that its nice to have one book to reference when you have a question. I'll use this book until i have some more exp I started training wih the plan on his website before i got this book. A decent book on running, but definitely basic. By the time I read it, I had already learned a lot of what was presented. Still good information, though. Although, I do think that the information could have been organized into longer chapters of related information.
If a chapter title only has enough supporting information for one or two pages with pictures too! Very interesting. Used this book to build off of a long run of 6 miles to train for a half marathon. It's easy to use, has several training plans for people that are doable not crazy!!! Completed my first half marathon in in 2 hours 8 minutes and plan on using the book again to run another one in May of VERY easy read, does repeat himself quite often throughout the book.

Beginner Half Marathon Training Tips to Set You Up for Success on Race Day
Super useful read. There are training programs to prepare you for your first half, or to help you improve your time. It covers everything from form, to eating, to dealing with weather and motivation issues. It made me feel much more comfortable as I'm beginning to train for my first half. I found a number of things which were just unbelievable. For example, the little section on losing fat. The run-walk method seems interesting and something I might try in the future, but I was hoping for something a little more in depth, more detailed. May 12, Scott Bauer rated it liked it. This book was OK, it was quite redundant, could had just as easily been a long pamphlet on how to start running.

How to Get Started
I loved the beginners program. I am hoping to get the courage to try his full marathon program. Feb 21, Theresa rated it really liked it. This was a pretty good book, a lot of great info for beginning and advanced runners. We'll see though how it helps me train for my half! I plan to use this book to train for a half marathon in September.
I've been using the run-walk-run method for at least a year, and I love it! It allows me to run longer distances without major pains or injury.

This was great timing for me as I start to consider training for a fall half. I have definitely been guilty of running workouts too fast in my marathon training. Years ago also I used to think that mile repeats were an all out effort also. I think some people describe them in that way! And thank you! Such great tips.
I fully admit my half marathon training right now is complete hodge podge. But I have zero intention of racing. Thank you! You pretty much nailed them all with this list! Easy runs seriously ARE key and it took me a while to realize that. I have a fellow running friend who refuses to run anything but hard and she struggles to improve her race pace.
This is such fantastic, comprehensive advice! I will say ever since I started working with a coach, I feel much more structured! I think once marathon training gets into the swing, it becomes easier to keep the right pace on easy runs — the legs are so tired from the long runs and hard workouts. Good luck as you continue your marathon training! I always thought that a half marathon should have its own name though I have no idea what. Although I ran my first half marathons knowing nothing about fueling or pacing. These are great tips. But soooo many people around me went out too fast and even with consistent pacing, I passed a lot of people. I did that after the Charleston Half last year and it really helped me with recovery and getting ready to train again. Way too many people just keep on training without taking even a day or two off!
A recovery week after a half — even a few days completely off — makes such a difference! Excellent tips! My biggest one? All so true! I hope your knees hold up for your half marathons!

Take your MM time and multiply by 1. Then add 2 minutes. The result is your suggested long run pace per mile on long runs at 60F or cooler. It is always better to run slower than this pace. Walkers slow down enough to avoid huffing and puffing.
